September 17—A Seattle Fire Investigator determined an early morning ship fire at Pier 91 was most likely ignited by an accumulation of grease and debris between the back of an operating stove and a wood frame wall. The fire is being considered accidental and the damage estimate is $35,000.

At 3:04 a.m., a 911 call came from a 167-foot commercial fishing vessel reporting smoke coming from a wall fire in the galley of the fishing processor. The approximately two dozen crew members safely evacuated. Firefighters arrived and were able to knock down the flames within a couple of minutes. The fire continued to smolder in the wooden wall behind a commercial stove. It took approximately 90 minutes to completely extinguish the flames. The fire was contained to the galley which was located two decks below the main deck.

78 fire personnel responded to the ship fire including the crew of the Fireboat and members of the Technical Rescue Team. Members of the Marine Emergency Response Team assessed the fire for any extension into the vessel.

Once the cause was determined the fishing vessel was turned back over to the crew.

There were no reported injuries.
